Weather in Tucson this week: cold, rain and maybe snow

B.Hernandez3 months ago

Plants and pets may need a warm, dry roof over their heads this week, as early winter weather creeps into the Tucson metro area.

A storm system is set to sweep through the greater Tucson metro area later this week, bringing a mixed bag of weather conditions from Wednesday night through Monday evening, according to the National Weather Center in Tucson.

There are chances for rain showers in the lower desert areas and snow for the higher elevations, with the highest likelihood for precipitation exceeding 0.25” in Graham, Greenlee, and the elevated terrain of Pinal County. Eastern Pima, Santa Cruz, and Cochise counties have lower probabilities for precipitation, the weather service says.

Elevations above 6,500 feet on Mount Lemmon and other area peaks may get snow on Wednesday night into early Thursday morning. Another chance is anticipated Thursday night through Friday.

Temperatures are also expected to dip 3 to 8 degrees below normal from Thursday through the weekend. Sub-freezing morning lows are forecast in valleys south and east of Tucson, with a significant freeze threat on Sunday morning.

Residents are encouraged to either bring plants inside or cover them to avoid freezing.

Additionally, near-freezing temperatures are possible in the outlying areas of Tucson and in southeast Pinal county.
