West Virginia high school football playoffs postponed after court filings
CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — High school football playoffs in West Virginia have been postponed after multiple schools and school districts filed injunctions, according to WVSSAC Executive Director David Price.
"We are extremely disappointed to not be having the playoffs this weekend," Price said. "We understand the frustration from all of the parties involved, and we want nothing more than to put the focus back on the student-athletes and their pursuit of a championship. However, we must abide by the decisions of the courts and their timeline."
This all started when Wood and Cabell County Schools filed injunctions. They said they felt a handful of teams in their regions were not seeded properly in the playoff brackets based on the strength of victory.
When Wood County's injunction was granted by the court on Saturday, the WVSSAC had to go back and reallocate point totals based on their original classifications.
As a result, four schools were bumped out of the playoffs, and four other schools were bumped up. These are the teams impacted:
Class AAAThis caused Point Pleasant Junior Senior High School to file an injunction, which was granted Monday night, according to an attorney for the school. The injunction greenlit a win-or-go-home compromise where they would play St. Albans, and Hampshire County would play Capital. The winners of these games would go on to the playoffs.
Wayne County Schools Superintendent Todd Alexander said they intend to file on behalf of Tolsia High School, which was taken out by St. Marys, and base their filing on what Point Pleasant did.
In Class AA, Westside High School didn't ask for a play-in game against Lincoln County, they just asked for the entire playoff system to be fixed. A judge is expected to hear that case in Wyoming County on Wednesday.
