Westmoreland County campus clippings: Seton Hill's Rick Hall earns 800th victory

Longtime Seton Hill women's volleyball coach Rick Hall reached a career milestone as his team swept a PSAC West match against Slippery Rock.

The win was the 800th for Hall, who is on his 40th season with the program.

Hall, a Griffins hall of famer, is now 800-434. The Latrobe and Saint Vincent graduate has guided the team to four national tournament appearances.

Hall is a two-time Northeast Regional Coach of the Year. As a player, he was in the Association of Volleyball Professionals and played on the Cuervo Gold Pro Beach Doubles and Miller Lite Pro Beach Doubles tours.

Seton Hill improved to 12-2 overall and 2-1 in conference.

In the win, senior Paige Cole had 12 kills and sophomore Catie Flohr added 11. Sophomore Kendyl Wagner had 19 assists and senior Abby Oesterling contributed 11.

Saint Vincent: Soccer standout Shelley Muto (Jeannette) and cross country runner and track athlete Chansler Poole (Penn-Trafford) will be part of the 2024 Saint Vincent Athletic Hall of Fame class.

Other inductees are Jenna Moon (lacrosse), Victor O'Korn (wrestling), Ron Spinosi (basketball), Dillon Stith (basketball) and Christopher "Kip" Watkins (baseball).

Muto, a member of the Class of 2004 and a grad student in '06, was an all-conference player. She ranks second all time at SVC with 34 career assists, and she also scored 13 goals. She had 15 assists in her junior season.

Muto served as an assistant coach at SVC as a grad student.

She currently is an administrator at Jeannette.

Poole, a 2014 grad, was the first men's cross country runner at SVC to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships.

A former PAC champion, he helped the Bearcats to four team conference titles.

In track, he was an All-American and won a PAC title in 1,500-meter run and also became the first Bearcat man to qualify for NCAAs.

The athletes will be recognized Oct. 28 during halftime of a football game against Carnegie Mellon at Chuck Noll Field.

Moon (Class of 2007) had 179 career points on 125 goals and 54 assists.

• O'Korn (1974) wrestled mainly at 150 pounds and won the West Virginia Invitational before earning SVC Winter Athlete of the Year in 1973-74.

• Spinosi (1979) scored 1,018 career points and set a program mark with 718 rebounds.

• Stith (2014) helped the Bearcats to a pair of PAC titles, scoring 1,310 points to go with 697 rebounds and 118 blocks.

He averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds as a senior, posting a team-record 50 points and grabbing 18 boards in a triple-overtime game against Thiel.

Stith played professionally in Australia and Ireland.

• Watkins (2005) was one of the best pitchers at SVC. He helped the Bearcats to a American Mideast Conference championship and a trip to the NAIA Region IX championship game, one game shy of the NAIA World Series.

As a senior, he set program records with 77 strikeouts and innings pitched (83 1/3). He also played shortstop and hit .345 with 19 RBIs.

His career strikeout record stood for 18 seasons.

Duquesne: Sophomore tight end Daniel Tarabrella (Penn-Trafford) recovered a Dukes' fumbes in the end zone for a touchdown in a 47-21 victory against LIU in the NEC opener.

Duquesne moved to 3-2 overall.

Grove City: The Wolverines moved to 4-0 with a 62-22 rout of Bethany in the PAC as junior linebacker Jack Jollie (Penn-Trafford) tied a game high with nine tackles, including 3.5 for loss.

Mercyhurst: Sophomore linebacker Eli Binakonsky (Hempfield) had three tackles and a sack for the Lakers in a 55-0 rout of Buffalo State in Erie.

Saint Vincent: Despite 12 tackles and a forced fumble by sophomore defensive back Robbie Labuda (Mt. Pleasant) and 10 tackles from senior linebacker Wiley Purry, the Bearcats fell to 1-4 with 16-13 loss to Geneva.

Seton Hill: Redshirt junior Ky'Ron Craggette rushed for 165 yards on 25 carries, sophomore receiver Cody Rubrecht (Greensburg Salem) threw a 43-yard touchdown pass on a trick play, and the defense had two interceptions, but the Griffins lost to Gannon, 23-17.

Seton Hill moved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC West.

Washington & Jefferson: Fifth-year linebacker Justin Johns (Franklin Regional) had one of the most dominating games of his career, collecting 16 tackles, 10 solo, as the Presidents beat Westminster, 21-14.

Johns has 20- and 18-tackle games in his career.

Senior tight end Zach Cernuto (Southmoreland), who has become one of the best red zone pass catchers in the PAC, pulled in a career-high eight receptions, including a 6-yard TD grab.

: Redshirt sophomore Cade Yacamelli (Penn-Trafford) scored his first college touchdown, bursting up the middle for a 30-yard run, as the Badgers rolled past Purdue, 52-6.

Men's soccer

Grove City: Sophomore forward Carlo Denis (Greensburg Central Catholic) assisted on a goal in a 6-0 victory over Thiel.

St. Louis: Senior forward Nate Ward (Greensburg Central Catholic) had an assist in a 2-1 victory over Loyola Chicago.

Ward, a former high school All-American, transferred from Indiana, where he played in two College Cups.

Seton Hill: Junior Julian Marker, freshman Nils Hinrich and junior Keegan Amos each scored a goal as the Griffins downed Pitt-Johnstown, 3-1.

Seton Hill (6-1-2, 2-0-1) is on a three-game unbeaten streak.

Women's soccer

Carlow: A pair of local players swept AMCC weekly awards.

Junior forward Jenna McGuinness (Norwin) was named the offensive player of the week, while junior goalkeeper Lyndsey Szekely (Greensburg Central Catholic) was the top defensive player.

McGuinness had four goals and an assist, while Szekely made eight saves and allowed one goal over two wins for the Celtics.

Coastal Carolina: Freshman Aris Lamanna (Franklin Regional) made her first start at the college level and earned a win. She made seven saves over 90 minutes as Coastal defeated Georgia Southern, 2-1.

Saint Vincent: Tanisha Grewal found her way into the record book.

The fifth-year midfielder broke the career record for goals by a Bearcats woman, with her 45th, to take the title from Kylie Simonini, who had the mark since 2008.

Grewal had two goals in a 2-0 win over Bethany, the second also carrying significance. It gave her 100 career points. Only two other players in program history have scored that many: Julie Gongaware and Simonini.

Grewal was named the PAC Offensive Player of the Week before she broke the record. She had two goals in a 7-1 win over Thiel.

Seton Hill: Sophomore Kendall Fabery (Southmoreland) was a welcome addition to the Griffins' program. Fabery began her college career at Cleveland State before transferring. She did not see playing time as a freshman.

Slippery Rock: Senior Sydney Patrick (Hempfield) scored her second goal of the season on a header in the 53rd minute as the Rock tied No. 5 Gannon, 1-1.

Westminster: Senior forward Brooke Horvath (Franklin Regional) assisted the winning goal as the Titans edged past Franciscan, 1-0.

The men's and women's soccer teams hosted an Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Awareness Day Friday to honor Michelle Vilchek, who died last August after a four-year battle with ALS.

She is the mother of Westminster senior midfielder Natalie Vilchek (Yough).

Youngstown State: Redshirt freshman Sara Felder (Greensburg Central Catholic) scored her third goal of the season as the Penguins blanked Wright State, 1-0, to improve to 4-7-2 overall and 2-3 in the Horizon League.

Women's volleyball

Carlow: Junior Rebecca Hess (Greensburg Central Catholic) was named the USCAA Specialist of the Week for the second straight time. The outside hitter had a team-high 27 digs and 19 kills, plus five blocks in a pair of losses.

Saint Vincent: Senior Kaelyn Staples-Klasnic had 12 kills and 16 digs, freshman Meegan Williams added 10 kills and 18 digs, and senior Vivian Poach handed out 29 assists, plus 13 digs, as the Bearcats (7-9, 1-0) swept Bethany, 3-0, in the PAC opener.

Thiel: Sophomore Arin DeLatte (Hempfield) collected 15 kills and five blocks as the Tomcats edged past Pitt-Bradford, 3-2.

Waynesburg: Senior defensive specialist Jordan Stein (Norwin) had a team-high 18 digs in a 3-0 sweep of Penn State Shenango.

Men's cross country

Pitt-Greensburg: Senior Dylan Acklerman finished second with an 8K time of 30 minutes, 56.8 seconds at the Pitt-Greensburg Fall Classic on the course at the Westmoreland Fairgrounds.

Women's cross country

Pitt-Greensburg: The Bobcats took second overall at the Pitt-Greensburg Fall Classic at the Westmoreland Fairgrounds. Junior Trinity Lockwood-Morris came in fifth in 28:59.4.

Men's golf

Grove City: Junior Michael Astrab (Norwin) tied for second place with a career-best round of 74 at the Grove City Invitational.

Senior Luke Kimmich (Franklin Regional) shot 75 to finish fourth.

Robert Morris: Redshirt sophomore Chuck Tragesser (Franklin Regional) was co-champion of the Virtues Intercollegiate, firing a school-record 7-under-par 65 in the final round.

He tied Yuqi Liu of Michigan.

Tragesser's round included eight birdies and a bogey, with sides of 32 and 36 at The Virtues Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio.

"Chuck's win at Virtues is without question one of if not the single biggest individual accomplishment in RMU golf history," RMU coach Steve Shingledecker said.

Tragesser transferred from Rhode Island.

West Virginia: Freshman Nick Turowski (Penn-Trafford) carded rounds of 78, 81 and 78 to finish 61st individually and help the Mountaineers win the Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational at Mystic Rock Golf Course.

Women's golf

Saint Vincent: Sophomore Lucy Brayton was named the PAC Player of the Week after she finished second at the Grove City Invitational. Brayton shot a 4-over-par 76.

Thiel: Freshman Emily Eutsey (Mt. Pleasant) was named the PAC co-newcomer of the week.

She shot 83 for a season-best finish (T-8th) at the Grove City Invitational.

Westmoreland County Community College: Freshman Jada Ford (Yough) won the individual title at the WPCC Championship at The Links at Spring Church.

The Wolfpack men's team placed second.
