What’s on sale and how to buy Washington Capitals merchandise as season gets underway

The start of the 2024-25 National Hockey League (NHL) season marks a crucial year for the Washington Capitals, who made the playoffs last year only to get knocked out by the New York Rangers.

Much attention will be focused on Alexander Ovechkin's chase for the all-time goal-scoring record, but that's far from the only storyline that accompanies the new season.

New head coach Spencer Carbery will see what he can do with this team, which added seven players during the offseason. Those included forwards Pierre Luc Dubois from the Los Angeles Kings and Andrew Mangiapane from the Calgary Flames, defenseman Jakob Chychrun from the Ottawa Senators and goaltender Logan Thompson from the Vegas Golden Knights.

Thompson will join last year's starter Charlie Lindgren, giving the Caps a strong goalie tandem. He already has won a game, stopping 24 of 26 shots in a 4-2 win over his former team, the Golden Knights, on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, defenseman John Carlson is entering his 16th year as the backbone of the Caps' defense.

But a good bit of the attention will stay on Ovechkin, who entered the season at 853 goals, 41 behind Wayne Gretsky's record of 894. After a slow start to the 2023-24 season with just eight goals in his first 43 games, he scored 23 goals in his last 36 games.

Ovechkin alone will give Capitals fans something to look forward to every game.

While it might take many years to get back to the championship-caliber team the Caps were in 2018, if they can improve around Ovechkin on the offensive side and get stellar goaltending, the Capitals should be competitive for a playoff spot this season.
