Where to find Veterans Day events and programs in San Diego County this weekend
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Each year, Nov. 11 is a day to honor those who have served and continue to serve in the United States armed forces. There are numerous events and programs happening this weekend throughout San Diego County, paying tribute to veterans.
Below is a compilation of just a few of several Veterans Day events happening across the county.
Fleet Week
Several events are happening as part of Fleet Week in San Diego, including military band concerts, parades and more.
From Friday through Monday, the public is invited to visit the Port Pavilion building which will be transformed into the Fleet Week Innovation Zone. The event will showcase high-tech military and civilian equipment, making it a good attraction for all ages. The Port Pavilion is located on the Broadway Pier at 1000 N. Harbor Rd. in San Diego.
Also happening on the pier this weekend are free ship tours, giving people a look at the day-to-day lives of sailors in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard. Visitors must be at least five years old to go on the ship tours. Strollers, glass, large bags and large backpacks are not allowed.
On Sunday, military members will show off their cooking skills using MREs, which stands for "meals ready to eat." MREs are meals meant to feed troops when cooked food is not available. The contest will also be held on the Broadway Pier.
SeaWorld San Diego expands military access in honor of Veterans Day
On Monday at 10:15 a.m., a procession of military-themed boats will grace San Diego Bay as part of the Veterans Day Boat Parade. The parade will be visible from Shelter Island, Harbor Island, the Embarcadero, Seaport Village and Coronado Tidelands Park.
Mt. Soledad Veterans Day Ceremony
On Saturday, Nov. 9 from 11 a.m. to noon, the Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial will pay homage to veterans of the Korean War, their families and those missing in action. The memorial can be found at 6905 La Jolla Scenic Drive South.
San Diego Veterans Day Parade
The annual San Diego Veterans Day Parade will be held again this year in honor of veterans and active-duty military members. Thousands of people are expected to line the parade route, which kicks off at 10 a.m. Monday in front of the San Diego County Administration Center at 1600 Pacific Hwy. and continues along Harbor Drive.
In addition, the USS Midway Museum is offering complimentary admission to military veterans all month long. Tickets and parade information can be found here .
City of Santee's Veterans Day Celebration
On Monday, community members in Santee are encouraged to do a self-guided walkthrough of banners displayed throughout the city with the names of hometown heroes. The walkthrough guide can be found on the city of Santee's website or the flyer box at the Veterans Memorial Monument located at 9085 Fanita Pkwy.
There will also be a small flag-raising ceremony on Monday at 11:11 a.m. at the monument, which will be decorated in honor of Veterans Day.
