Who’s running for Boise’s legislative District 19? There’s only one contested race

H.Wilson24 min ago

Voters in the Boise North End will have a choice between two legislative newcomers vying for the House seat vacated by a Democratic incumbent.

District 19, which includes Hidden Springs, Boise Hills Village and parts of Downtown Boise and Warm Springs Avenue, lost Democrat Lauren Necochea, who announced earlier this year that she would not seek reelection to focus on her role as Democratic Party chair.

Democrat incumbents Sen. Melissa Wintrow and Rep. Chris Matthias are unopposed in the general election.

Monica Church, the Democrat in the race for House Seat 19A, is a teacher and newcomer to politics, but she has deep roots in Idaho's political sphere. Her grandparents were former Gov. Cecil Andrus and his wife, Carol, and former U.S. Sen. Frank Church and his wife, Bethine.

Church and Andrus were prominent Idaho Democrats, and the families' names are associated with everything from wilderness areas to Greenbelt trails and a public policy institute at Boise State University.

Church's campaign website lists students, teachers and public education as some of her top priorities. She is also deeply involved in environment issues and serves on the board of the Andrus Center for Public Policy and the Sawtooth Society.

Republican Jim Feederle is also running for House Seat 19A. Feederle ran against Necochea for the seat in 2020 and lost with 31% of the vote.

Feederle does not have a campaign website, but some of his priorities are outlined on the website for the Ronald Reagan Republican Club of West Ada County, which lists Feederle as treasurer.

According to the club website, Feederle grew up in a military family and "became an instant Reaganite" in the 1980s.

He describes himself as a "Constitutional Christian Conservative" and National Rifle Association member, as well as a supporter of the Idaho Freedom Foundation, Second Amendment Alliance of Ada County and Fraternal Order of Police.

The Statesman sent voter guide questionnaires to each of the candidates in contested races. Their responses are below. Feederle did not respond.
