Sports Why Chiefs Need 'Extreme Focus' To Slay 49ers

The next chapter in what is becoming a rather fierce rivalry between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers is about to be written.

With the Chiefs coming off their bye week and the 49ers with a gritty win over the Seattle Seahawks, everything is shaping up for a colossal clash at Levi's Stadium.

For Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes , while his team is flying high at 5-0 and is coming off a bye week, he is under no illusions as to what kind of challenge Kyle Shanahan's team presents.

"I think it's as big as a regular season game as you could play in," Mahomes said . "They're a great football team, and I always like going up against the best, and that's what we're going up against this week. So we understand it's going to be a big game, we understand it's going to take our best to win, and so you have to have extreme focus and know that it is going to be one play that decides the entire game."

Funnily enough, Mahomes has a 4-0 record against the 49ers in his career, including two Super Bowl wins.

Through those four games, Mahomes has a total of 10 touchdowns, four interceptions, and 1,356 yards. So Patrick does what he wants against the 49ers, especially in the regular season (68.1 completion percentage, six touchdowns, one interception, 737 yards, 123.4 passer rating).

Given the injuries the Chiefs are dealing with, it adds another layer to this clash, but with Kareem Hunt and Juju Smith-Schuster showing that they can carry the load without Rashee Rice and Isiah Pacheco, it will be a fascinating watch.

In what is a true heavyweight fight, who blinks first? History tells us it isn't Mahomes.
