Wintry mix could fall in southeast Nebraska, western Iowa early Friday

A low-pressure system could bring a mix of rain and snow to southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa starting early Friday.

The Falls City, Nebraska, and Clarinda, Iowa, areas could see a prolonged wintry mix, according to the National Weather Service in Valley.

The system likely won’t bring much precipitation, said Katie Gross, a meteorologist with the weather service.

“We might just see a little bit of light snow maybe mixed with some rain and a tiny bit of freezing rain,” she said.

The most likely scenario is that snowfall could measure up to half an inch. But, depending on a couple of degrees difference, other outcomes are possible. The weather service said a snowier scenario could bring up to 2 inches of snow, while an icier scenario could instead deliver up to one-tenth of an inch of ice.

“Our forecast right now is really maybe around one-tenth of an inch (of snow). We’re not expecting a whole lot of snow,” Gross said.

The system is forecast to clear out of the southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa areas by Friday evening.

There’s a 20% chance that precipitation could occur in the Omaha area Saturday night. The metro area could see a similar wintry mix with some light rain initially and then transition over to some light snow during the overnight hours.

“It doesn’t look like anything too crazy,” Gross said, adding the metro area could see up to one-tenth of an inch of snow.

While the precipitation likely won’t be much, Gross advised motorists to be on the lookout for icy patches or slick spots on untreated roads and surfaces.

High temperatures in the Omaha area are forecast to reach the upper 30s Friday and Saturday. From Sunday into next week, high temperatures are forecast to hit the low to mid-40s.
