Works begin on Mill Road Bridge following protests

Cambridgeshire County Council has said works to install a controversial bus gate on a city centre road have now started.

Works on Mill Road Bridge, Cambridge, were originally due to start on Monday night but were hampered by protesters.

Council contractors secured the section between Mill Road and Kingston Street at 02:00 GMT on Friday and closed the road.

The authority said the roadworks will now take place continuously until the construction had been finished.

A statement on the county council's website said it had to look at "a different way to establish a safe working area" after the works were disrupted for three days.

It added the road closure would be in place until at least the morning on 16 November, or when the construction had been completed by contractors.

In a statement issued on Wednesday the council said it had experienced "vandalism" to the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras in the area. It added CCTV evidence of the crime has been shared with police.

The council urged those wishing to protest to do so peacefully.
