A 3-year-old girl was hit and killed by a driver attempting to back into a parking space in Bellevue Tuesday evening.

Bellevue police said at 7:10 p.m., they received a call reporting a crash involving a 3-year-old girl who'd been hit by a vehicle in the 14100 block of SE 4th St. in Bellevue.

When police arrived, they found the 3-year-old girl and attempted to provide lifesaving measures. However, shortly after their arrival, the child died at the scene where the crash occurred.

Police said the crash occurred while a vehicle was attempting to back into a parking stall, noting the driver struck the child while about three-fourths of the way into the stall. Police said the 3-year-old and her mother were taking a walk at the time when the crash occurred.

Police said the driver, a 45-year-old man, stayed at the scene and was cooperative with authorities.

"This is obviously a very tragic scene," said Capt. Ryan Parrott with the Bellevue Police Department. "As a parent myself, this is the worst nightmare anyone could go through to lose a 3-year-old daughter in this manner. We are trying to be respectful at the same time, provide an investigation. Any time a collision like this occurs, we are aware that a criminal action could have occurred."

The BPD said they're currently investigating whether or not the driver was impaired at the time of the crash.
