Your Stories Q&A: Will gas prices dip to $3 or below in Syracuse?
S.Martin6 hr ago
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) – You ask, we answer!Question: With gas prices slowly falling, could we drop to $3 or below? There are gas stations around Syracuse, mainly in the northern suburbs, that are selling gas below $3 a gallon . But that's not the average. According to AAA, on average, the Syracuse region is paying $3.19 for a gallon of regular gas. That's above the national average of $3.08. Winter is typically when we see the lowest gas prices, due to cheaper winter blend of gasoline being used at the pump and demand is down compared the warmer months of the year. If Syracuse drops to a $3 average or even cheaper, it would be the first time since May of 2021, according to AAA. Gas prices soared to record highs in June of 2022. The Syracuse region was paying an average of $4.97.Will we dip to $3 a gallon? Patrick De Haan, GasBuddy's head of petroleum analysis, thinks we could see prices drop another $.05 to $.10 by Christmas. "I don't know if we will fully drop below the $3 a gallon mark this winter, it is a possibility. But I think we'll kind of stabilize in the upper $2's, low $3's for most of the winter, " De Haan said.AAA's Take: "...if the national average gets below $3, it will take longer for local prices to reach that level. Often times, we see the cheapest prices in January when demand is lower and cheaper winter blend fuel is being used. Hopefully, we'll see prices below $3 by then, but with so many factors impacting gas prices, it's difficult to predict," said Elizabeth Carey, director of public relations & corporate communications for AAA of Western and Central New York. Macy's (M) Chairman and CEO Tony Spring took the helm of the nearly 100-year-old department store in February of this year. With Macy's facing falling sales, losing market share, and receiving pressure from an activist investor, Spring announced "A Bold New Chapter," an initiative to turn the company around and "create a more modern Macy's, Inc." Yahoo Finance senior reporter Brooke DiPalma speaks with Tony Spring at Yahoo Finance Invest about this turnaround plan. "We're looking at ourselves in the mirror and we see something that we don't like," Spring says. After assessing its issues, the retailer is charting a new course that involves closing old stores in low-traffic areas and opening its new "go-forward" locations and smaller storefronts. "Our strategy is a three-year strategy, and it's creating sustainable, profitable growth. It's delivering a better experience for the customer. It's reimagining this portfolio and ultimately delivering more value to our shareholders," Spring explains to Yahoo Finance. Even with a new strategy, Macy's faces existential hurdles like a more choiceful consumer. "Am I concerned when I see the customer being careful about price? Of course," says Spring. Still, he points to Macy's vast portfolio as a selling point even in this environment and expressed confidence in the company's ability to bring customers through its doors.
