Zach Galifianakis Addresses 'Between Two Ferns' Return

Zach Galifianakis does not think the world is ready for Between Two Ferns to return because of all the bad news happening at the moment.

The Hangover star hosted the Funny or Die web series intermittently for 10 years until 2018, which saw him interview major celebrities, but asking cruel and ignorant questions. The big names that appeared on the show ranged from former President Barack Obama to Brad Pitt.

As well as the web series, Galifianakis made a Netflix movie called Between Two Ferns: The Movie for Netflix and a Comedy Central television special.

But don't expect Between Two Ferns to make a comeback anytime soon, even though plenty of people have asked the actor to bring it back.

"We're living in meaner times and I'm not sure that show would be as appreciated nowadays," Galifianakis told Newsweek.

"I've been asked to do it, and I've gotten close to doing them, but I don't really pursue it. If people come to me and I think there's some creative that can happen, that's wonderful, but I don't really pursue it at all."

The actor also addressed rumors as to whether or not the Hangover movie franchise would be getting a fourth installment.

"I've never heard anything like that, no one has said anything to me about that. We've done that dance," he said.

Galifianakis wants to focus more on moving into dramatic roles, and is currently starring in the feature film Winner opposite Emilia Jones (Coda) and Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights).

In it, he plays the dad of former National Security Agency ( NSA ) contract worker, Reality Winner , who was sentenced to five years and three months in jail for leaking documents that proved Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election . Winner was released into home confinement in 2020 to serve out the rest of her prison term.

"It's a little easier, to be honest, doing it dramatically. Comedy is so opinionated nowadays...The dramatic stuff is something I hope to continue to do, because I don't get to do it that much."

He added: "As a comedic actor you're used to working a certain muscle and then it's fun to figure out if you can tell different stories with different types of acting."

Galifianakis got to meet Winner and her family, but not her dad who passed away in 2016.

"I don't think Reality anticipated that this was how her life was going to go, but she does have the personality to continue to have an amazing life," he told Newsweek. "I think you're going to hear things from her down the road that are going to be pretty amazing."

Winner is now in select theaters and on demand.
