3 hospitalized after white powder from suspicious container explodes inside Colorado family’s home

ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) - A family is safe after an unknown white powder exploded in their home earlier this week.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office says it was called to an apartment complex Tuesday night after one of the families discovered a small container on their front porch.

"[They] brought it inside their apartment. When they opened it, a white powdery substance exploded," the sheriff's office said.

Three people were exposed and taken to the hospital as a precaution. A Hazmat team and bomb squad were then called to the scene to figure out what the substance was.

After testing the substance, South Metro Fire Rescue said the powder wasn't hazardous, but tests were coming back inconclusive as far as what it was:

The sheriff's office said the FBI was taking over the case.

"Tests of the white powder were inconsistent so the FBI Denver was contacted for additional follow up testing to help determine what it was. The investigation is currently ongoing," it said.

The family was unharmed.
