COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - One person suffered critical injuries after a fire started in a southeast Colorado Springs home overnight.

Police in the area first spotted the flames coming from a garage attached to a house at the corner of Chelton and Darkwood Place. The neighborhood is just west of Chelton and South Academy. Officers found an injured man in the backyard and rushed him to the hospital.

The fire department had crews at the home by 4:10 a.m.

According to officials on scene, the blaze started in the garage and spread to the neighboring home, though based on what our 11 News crew is seeing, firefighters appear to have extinguished the flames before they caused substantial damage.

At least one vehicle inside the garage appears to have been destroyed in the fire.

Two firefighters and one officer sustained minor injuries, though officials have not elaborated on the nature of their injuries or the injuries to the victim found in the backyard.

The fire was declared under control about an hour after firefighters got to the home. The scene remains active as of 6 a.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
