Portland kicks off work week with sunshine, high near 80, but showers are possible by Tuesday

Sunday's warm, sunny weather will overflow into the work week as Monday stays clear and warms to about 80 degrees in Portland.

But the National Weather Service says summer-like weather only hangs on for one more day. Forecasters say conditions will gradually trend cooler Tuesday through Friday with temperatures holding right around average due to a series of decaying Pacific fronts that will bring increasing clouds and several chances of light rain showers, especially along the coast.

Portland will start the week sunny on Monday, with calm winds, but clouds will increase overnight. The first front will likely bring rain to coastal areas from Tillamook County northward by the next morning.

Portland has a 30% chance of showers early Tuesday. By lunchtime the rain will have moved on, and skies may clear to partly sunny by the afternoon. The high will reach about 71 degrees.

Tuesday night has a 40% chance of showers. Temps will lower into the 50s.

Shower chances continue Wednesday with cloudy skies all morning. The afternoon should feature some clearing and sun breaks. The high will cool to about 66 degrees.

Thursday promises to be a mostly clear day with sunny skies, but cool temps with highs reaching near 67 degrees, which is about average during early October.

Extended forecasts are looking at a day of widespread rain on Friday, although models are not in agreement with how strong this system may be. Once it moves through, it's possible the weekend will be warm and dry.
