1999: Rochester Century wins first football game with a victory over Mayo

  • Derrick Malone rushed for 215 yards to lead Rochester Century to a 16-7 upset of Mayo in high school football before a crowd of over 3,000 at Century High School Stadium. This was Century's first varsity win in the school's second year. The previous season, Century lost 58-0 to Mayo. (Century followed that win with a 27-0 victory against Albert Lea the following week.)

  • Rochester Police will continue to enforce the city's noise ordinance. A District Court recently upheld the validity of the ordinance.
  • The Grace Episcopal Church in Pine Island will mark its 100th anniversary. The church building was erected in 1874, and the first service was conducted by Bishop Henry Whipple.

  • Sheriff Hauck declared war against the hit-and-run motorist. Several incidents have occurred in the past month where a driver has not stopped after an accident.
  • High winds uprooted trees and a bridge was washed out near Mantorville as winter appeared on the first day of autumn. Power and communication poles were down, and downed trees blocked many roads.
  • The Rochester High School football team won a hard-fought 6-3 victory over Cresco, Iowa.
