How Time Flies is a daily feature looking back at Pantagraph archives to revisit what was happening in our community and region.

Oct. 16, 1924: In competition with more than a thousand high schools of the same class throughout the country, Normal Community High School won first place in a national contest with the NCHS "Echoes of 1924," the school annual. The silver loving cup was presented to the school by Lon Kerrick, president of the school board.

Oct. 16, 1949: The Junior Chamber of Commerce safety lane will open in the 1300 block of North Main Street on Monday (Oct. 17). Motorists may drive their cars through the lane for a free checkup until Friday evening. The goal of the check — which looks at brakes, lights, wheel alignment, rearview mirror and horn — is to detect functional defects that might cause accidents. To stress what can happen if a vehicle is not working properly, Jaycees will exhibit a demolished auto on the southeast courthouse lawn during the week.

Oct. 16, 1974: Bloomington's police counselor program has been rated the best among 30 projects funded by the Illinois Law Enforcement Commission. The program instituted in 1970 as a result of police-student confrontations was ranked no. 1 by graduate assistants studying police community relations projects at Sangamon State University in Springfield.

Oct. 16, 1999: Bloomington physician Dr. Kristen Wurzburger, an internist at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center and McLean County Internal Medicine Associates, was among medical workers honored with the Nobel Peace Prize for their membership in Doctors Without Borders. The organization revolutionized private aid by asserting a right to intervene in any country to treat the wounded, sick and starving. Wurzburger, 33, worked with the group in African for several months before she moved to the Twin Cities in 1997.
