Two childhood friends who died after being hit by a car were cycling home from a pub crawl, a coroner has said.

Edward Trudgill and Daniel Macdonald, both 39, were struck by a red Mini on the A143 Bungay Road at Billingford near Diss, Norfolk, at 21:24 BST on 27 August 2023.

An inquest heard how Mr Trudgill had likely fallen off his electric bike and was lying on the wrong side of the road when the incident occurred.

The inquest into Mr Macdonald's death will be held on Friday afternoon.

The post-mortem examination showed Mr Trudgill had a blood alcohol level of 227mg, which was more than two and half times over the legal limit for drink driving. In England the limit is 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

The examination showed his cause of death was from multiple injuries and the report said he "died as a result of a road traffic accident while riding an e-bike".

Samantha Goward, area coroner at Norfolk Coroner's Court, said there was nothing the driver could have done.

Both men died at the scene of the incident.

A man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving, however, Norfolk Police said no further action would be taken against the driver.
