A few strong storms possible in Alabama on Tuesday
S.Martin1 hr ago
Alabama has entered what's often called its "secondary" severe weather season, and a few severe storms will be possible this week. The National Weather Service said isolated severe storms will be possible starting overnight tonight and into the day on Tuesday ahead of a cold front. That front will also bring much-needed rainfall and some cooler temperatures. Wind gusts up to 60 mph are the main concern with any stronger storm that develops, according to the weather service. The southwest corner of Alabama has also been included in a Level 1 risk for severe weather today, mainly after midnight and into the morning hours. Here's the outlook for Monday: The best chance for stronger storms will be in south Alabama, but much of the state could also hear some thunder, according to forecasters. NOAA's Storm Prediction Center has expanded a Level 1 out of 5 (marginal) risk for severe weather in the state for Tuesday. It now includes much of south and central Alabama (see the map at the top of this post). A Level 1 risk means that isolated severe storms will be possible.. Rain chances will begin to increase overnight, with south Alabama likely seeing rain first. It should spread northward and eastward during the day on Tuesday. Here's the weather service's rainfall forecast for tonight through Wednesday morning: Winds are expected to also be breezy as the weather system approaches, especially in south Alabama. The weather service in Mobile warned that the approaching system will bring a host of hazards to coastal Alabama. Forecasters said minor coastal flooding, a high risk of rip currents, high surf and heavy rain will be possible along the coast, with some areas potentially getting up to 5 inches from tonight through the day on Tuesday. Minor coastal flooding was reported overnight, according to the weather service, and more will be possible tonight. Central Alabama will see rain chances rise overnight and into the day on Tuesday. Here's the outlook for central Alabama: As for north Alabama, the weather service said there will be a "very low chance of a strong storm or two" primarily south of the Tennessee River and along and west of Interstate 65. Forecasters said if storms develop the main concern would be damaging wind gusts. Here's the north Alabama outlook for this week:
