After Referendum, District 200 Hopes To Start Upgrades In Summer 2025
WHEATON, IL — After the majority of voters showed support for Community Unit School District 200's recent $151.5 million bond referendum question, the district aims to begin upgrades to three of its middle schools in summer 2025.
The project comprises safety upgrades, infrastructure repairs and enhancements, improved accessibility features and more repairs to Edison, Franklin and Monroe Middle Schools.
Alyssa Barry, Director of Community Engagement and Communications, told Patch the district will likely open bids for the project this coming spring. When the upgrades begin, they will focus on additions to the schools while classes are not in session. Once students return in fall 2025, crews will shift their focus to work that can take place outside of the schools.
In summer 2026, it's anticipated that interior renovations will begin, per Barry. She added that "substantial completion of all three projects" is expected by the close of summer 2027.
To keep community members informed, District 200 has introduced a website for the Middle School Capital Facilities Updates . The site also includes archived information about the referendum question.
Tuesday's general election saw nearly 68 percent of voters favoring the referendum question , per unofficial vote totals.
In a letter to community members, Superintendent Dr. Jeff Schuler said, "This journey began in 2013 with conversations about the long-term needs of our schools. Together, we have shaped a plan to address those needs thoughtfully, responsibly, and sustainably. We deeply appreciate the time, input, and trust you've extended to us along the way. Thank you for coming together as a community to prioritize the learning, safety, and well-being of our students and teachers."
