What to know ahead of the second round of the IHSA playoffs for Coles County area teams
After a thrilling opening week of the IHSA playoffs, some areal teams are still standing and playing for a spot in the state quarterfinals. Here's a breakdown of second-round matchups.
CLASS 3A
No. 2 Sullivan-Okaw Valley at No. 10 Benton
Records: Sullivan 10-0, Benton 7-3
Of Note: Sullivan's undefeated season continued with a win over Mount Carmel in round one. It got revenge on the team that ended its season last year and has an opportunity to make it to the state quarterfinals after it came up just short last season. Sullivan's matched up with a Benton program that has some wins over Class 4A playoff schools in a tough schedule. That makes them the toughest opponent of the season so far for Sullivan.
Prediction: Benton 21, Sullivan 14
CLASS 2A
No. 6 Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond at No. 3 Quincy Notre Dame
Records: ALAH 9-1, QND 9-1
Of Note: As a program that had been at the Class 4A level until recently, QND's regular season against large school programs makes them a tough matchup and state title contender at the Class 2A level. Playing in the Central State 8 has prepared them well for the postseason. It's nothing ALAH hasn't faced before — the Knights lost to the Raiders in the first round last year, 21-14.
Prediction: Quincy Notre Dame 42, ALAH 21
CLASS 1A
No. 6 Toledo Cumberland at No. 3 Camp Point Central
Records: Cumberland 8-2, Camp Point 9-1
Of Note: The Lincoln Prairie set Cumberland up for a first-round win with matchups against playoff Class 2A and 3A programs with enough lower-quality opponents elsewhere in the conference to get a high seed. Cumberland was impressive in a win over Tuscola, a program that's had success in the playoffs at the 1A level, and goes up against a Central team that had little trouble against Nokomis in round one. Cumberland had a similar result against Nokomis in the regular season, so this is a tossup.
Prediction: Camp Point Central 20, Toledo Cumberland 13
