Are the 100-degree days over in Sacramento?

(FOX40.COM) — This summer was a hot one in Sacramento and much of the world, which ended a string of record-breaking months in July .

With the end of summer approaching and a rise in temperatures this coming weekend, many people might ask if the days of 100°F and above are over. The answer is, kind of.

Sacramento sets blistering new records in July

As the final days of the month approach, there's a chance for the Sacramento area to experience temperatures in the high 90s, but with each passing day, the potential to reach 100°F keeps dropping.

FOX40's Chief Meteorologist Adam Epstein looked through historical records from the National Weather Service and found that, since 1948, there have been 24 instances where Sacramento reached 100°F or higher in the second half of September.

Other refreshing data show that there has not been a heat wave entirely in the second half of the month, meaning a three-day stretch of 100+ degrees.

According to Epstein, the chances of reaching triple-digit weather drop considerably as we enter October, but can't be completely ruled out.

The data from 1948 to today shows that there were only four years when Sacramento reached 100°F in October, with the last time occurring in 2001.

The latest day of the year when Sacramento reached 100°F or higher? That was in 1991 when the temperature reached 102°F on October 10.

Suffice it to say, Sacramento may be in the clear when it comes to having very hot days in the next weeks.

The question is when the first 100-degree day of next year will happen. The current record for the city was set in 1982, when the city hit the threshold on May 24.
