Retail energy provider Shell Energy Solutions plans to lay off more than 100 workers at the company's Houston-area office.

The layoffs were announced via a Worker Adjustment & Retraining Notification Notice (WARN) filed with the Texas Workforce Commission. The letter was sent on Oct. 11 and specifies that 103 employees at its Houston location would be laid off on Dec. 13. The positions range from business analysts to engineering and enterprise project managers.

A Shell representative confirmed via a statement to Houston Public Media that the layoffs would be taking place to account for "anticipated ongoing and future operations."

"We can confirm that Shell Energy Solutions did communicate the intent to reduce the size of its staff," the representative said. "As part of these efforts, we anticipate approximately 100 Shell Energy Solutions staff to be impacted. We are committed to supporting staff throughout this process. There is no current impact to customers with Shell Energy services and we will continue business as usual."

Shell Energy Solutions began operating in Texas in 2022 after it acquired MP2 Energy in 2017. According to the original launch announcement by the company, the energy provider offers customers a 100% renewable electricity plan. The company's target audience includes homeowners with solar panels and offers them a buyback plan for excess solar power sent back to the state's power grid.

Shell Energy Solutions is owned by the British-based Shell Oil company, which operates its U.S. headquarters in Houston.
