Brandon man leads Lyon County officials on high-speed chase

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A Brandon man is behind bars in Lyon County facing multiple charges.

According to a news release, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle near Highway 9 and Cleveland Avenue at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Upon investigation, the SUV fled the scene and started a high-speed pursuit. The pursuit reached speeds upwards of 117 mph. During the pursuit, the driver reportedly created multiple driving hazards and made numerous traffic violations.

The pursuit ended between Jackson and Jay Avenue along Highway 9.

The driver was identified as Derek Wayne Vining, 32, of Brandon, South Dakota.

Vining was transported to Lyon County Jail and booked in on the following charges: Theft, Eluding, Operation without Owner's Consent, Failure to Yeild Half of Roadway, Reckless Driving, Careless Driving, Unsafe Passing, Unsafe Stopping on the Highway and Speed Citations.

Vining also had an active warrant out of Lyon County for Probation Violation.

Vining currently has a $18,000 bond. Additional charges are pending further investigation.
