CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — The Chesapeake curbside recycling referendum does not pass.

The referendum appeared on Chesapeake residents' ballots on Nov. 5 to determine whether or not Chesapeake would re-instate their curbside recycling. The referendum would have imposed a mandatory $10 a month fee.

The city does still have drop off sites that are accessible 24/7, except for the City Park and Deep Creek Park locations.

With most of the votes counted, more than 62% voted against paying the $10 fee a month to re-instate curbside recycling.

The question was posed as follows:

"Should City Council adopt an ordinance imposing mandatory fees of up to $10 per month on all households that receive city trash service in order to reestablish curbside recycling for those households only?"

Newly reelected Mayor Rick West said back in July that he was reluctant to vote yes on a referendum, as the city looks to potentially work with Southeastern Public Service Authority on a one-bin process in the near future .
