MONROE, La. (KNOE) - The south side of Monroe can look forward to new sidewalks and lights.

The City of Monroe broke ground on a streetscaping project along Louisiana Highway 15 and Winnsboro Road. The city says the project will include 150 pedestrian lights and seven and a half miles worth of completed sidewalks on each side of the road.

The project is a little more than $2 million between state and city funding.

"This project is very, very, very necessary for the citizens of south Monroe. I just got through talking to a gentleman across the street in a wheelchair. He's a friend of mine, and I told him when I campaigned that your tax dollars do matter," said Monroe City Councilman Verbon Muhammad, Sr. of District No. 5.

City engineer C. Morgan McCallister stated, "So, imagine this area with a complete ADA, safe routes for accessibility by foot or by bike."

This project is expected to take 210 working days from Nov. 7, 2024, and be completed by July 2025.
