A Connelly Springs man was struck and killed while riding his moped along U.S. Highway 70 on Thursday afternoon.

Daniel Wayne Salmons, 57, died at the scene of the crash, N.C. State Highway Patrol Trooper Christopher Casey said in a news release.

The N.C. State Highway Patrol investigated the fatal collision in Burke County on U.S. 70 near Lockee Street in Icard around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. A 2022 moped, driven by Salmons, slowed down to turn right into a private driveway off U.S. Highway 70, Casey said. A 2023 BMW X1 driving west on U.S. Highway 70 failed to reduce speed adequately and collided with the moped.

Salmons was thrown from the moped, Casey said.

The driver of the BMW, Haygen Rashae Sigmon, 20, of Connelly Springs, was not injured.

Charges are pending the completion of the investigation and consultation with the Burke County District Attorney's office, Casey said. U.S. Highway 70 was closed in the area for approximately two hours during the on-scene investigation, Casey said.
