Crews break ground on new affordable housing in New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — City leaders were on hand for Tuesday's Monarch Apartment Homes groundbreaking ceremony in the West River neighborhood.

The new building replaces the abandoned New England Linen company on Derby Avenue, which was built in 1900 and previously known as Monarch Cleaners.

The project will cost about $27 million. Developers said it's a big step towards expanding affordable housing options.

"This development is especially important to all of us as it will be 100% affordable, offering 64 new apartments for families and individuals earning at or below 80% of area median income." Lewis Brown, principal and managing member of Honeycomb Real Estate Partners, said.

More than 2,000 housing units have been built in New Haven since 2020. Mayor Justin Elicker said city leaders are looking to add about 3,500 more. Of those, an estimated 40% are affordable.
