Daily Minute: Gold's site for sale; man who stabbed officer pleads guilty; Nebraska basketball struggles
Good morning, Lincoln. Here's what you should know today.
Gold's site up for sale
A portion of the Gold's site in downtown Lincoln – one of the three spots being considered for a convention center – is on the market again.
REV Development, which bought the old Gold's Department store building at 11th and O streets for $5 million in 2021, is still redeveloping the original department store built in 1924 into a 104-bedroom Hampton Inn, but it has put four other lots on the market for $11.75 million.
Those include the now-demolished south half of the Gold's building along 11th and N streets. The sale price includes demolition costs for the former site of the downtown senior center on O Street and a building that once housed Lincoln Federal Savings Bank.
Man who stabbed officer pleads guilty
A Chicago man who stabbed a Lincoln Police officer in the neck on a crowded bus at a stop in Lincoln just over a year ago pleaded guilty Tuesday to second-degree assault on an officer and use of a deadly weapon.
In exchange, prosecutors dropped the attempted murder and resisting arrest charges Simon Kafka had been facing for the incident that occurred Oct. 17, 2023, which ended with the officer wounded and Kafka shot.
NU men's basketball team struggling
Since the Nebraska men's basketball team struggled in Saturday night's 63-58 win over Bethune-Cookman, coach Fred Hoiberg has sought answers.
Recent history suggests Nebraska is a better offensive team than it demonstrated in the first week of the season. The Huskers have pure shooters capable of improving the team's 24.4% clip from 3-point range.
It all leads Hoiberg onto the tightrope of addressing early-season issues without overreacting to a small sample size.
"What do we do? "Do we put in a new system?," he asked. "Do we stick with what we've been doing and just do it better? A lot of it was just playing out of control — not so much the system."
