Duo arrested for car break-ins Mansfield
MANSFIELD — Troopers from Troop-C Tolland were dispatched to Warren Circle in Mansfield after receiving reports of a male and female breaking into vehicles early Wednesday morning.
The suspects were reported to be driving a dark-colored SUV and were seen leaving the area.
According to State Police, when they entered the cul-de-sac of Warren Circle, they observed a dark-colored Volkswagen SUV with a Massachusetts license plate, which two individuals occupied. They were seen leaving the area of Warren Circle.
The responding Trooper then initiated a traffic stop after seeing the vehicle. The operator complied and pulled over on Route 275 of Westwood Road.
The vehicle's driver was identified as Joseph T. Walker, 34, of Worcester, Mass., and the female passenger as Jada Disire Williams, 24, also of Worcester.
When State Police questioned about their presence in the area, both occupants stated they were unfamiliar with the location and were seeking directions.
The duo then explained a family member of Williams lived nearby, and they were on their way back to Worcester.
During the interaction, the Trooper noticed a large pickax in the back seat, along with several jackets and two purses — one in the back seat and the other in the front seat.
Another Trooper who was canvassing the area said it was discovered a Honda Accord with a smashed window appeared to have been rummaged through.
State Police said the Trooper recognized Walker and Williams from a previous larceny investigation in Tolland the week before.
According to State Police, the pair matched the descriptions of the two suspects involved in the theft of a purse from a vehicle. The purse's credit card had been used for purchases at a local gas station in Tolland following the theft.
Based on the information, the Trooper instructed both occupants to exit the vehicle, and they were detained as the investigation continued.
The Trooper had probable cause to search the vehicle, where multiple purses containing ID cards not belonging to either occupant were found.
Walker and Williams were then placed under arrest.
A search of Walker revealed he was in possession of the stolen credit card from the Tolland incident.
A witness who was the caller reporting the incident told Troopers she was working at a facility in the area when she looked out the window and saw a dark-colored SUV driving the wrong way through the Mansfield cul-de-sac.
State Police said the witness saw the vehicle parked on the road and, shortly after, heard a loud noise from outside.
She then saw a male and female rummaging through the Honda Accord, which she recognized as her coworker's vehicle. That was when she called 911 to report the incident.
The owner of the Honda later provided Troopers with a list of items missing from the vehicle.
Walker and Williams were transported to Troop C and separately charged with possession of burglar tools, criminal mischief in the second degree, larceny in the fourth degree and identity theft in the third degree.
Walker and Williams were each assigned a $150,000 bond but were unable to post it. Both are scheduled for arraignment at Rockville Superior Court on Nov. 6.
The larceny case in Tolland remains under investigation.
