Wyandotte students repurpose damaged building into community picnic shelter

WYANDOTTE, Okla. — Students in the Wyandotte School District are turning a heavily damaged building into something the entire community can enjoy.

About a year and a half ago, the owners of this former Wyandotte gas station approached Wyandotte school administrators about donating it to the district.

The district had a structural engineer look at the building, who determined that due to age and storm damage, it would be cost prohibitive to try and renovate it. Instead, it will be transformed into a community picnic structure, with stone from the original building incorporated to honor the family donating the building.

"The shelter is going to be built by our construction class. We have a class, a career tech class, and they've already done two that are out here in our commons area," said Superintendent Brad Wade.

The plan is for the structure to be completed sometime next year.

The president of Tuskegee University in Alabama announced Monday that the school is being closed to outsiders and that its security chief has been fired in the wake of a mass shooting Sunday on campus. Mark Brown, president and CEO of the historically black university, announced the changes as the investigation of the mass shooting continued Monday and the local sheriff warned those responsible for the shooting that "we are going to find you." "The Tuskegee University community is heartbroken by what happened on our campus Sunday morning," Brown said during a news conference Monday afternoon.
