Everclear at the Flagstar Strand and more metro area music this weekend

At 62 years old and 33 years of his band Everclear behind him, Art Alexakis declares, "I don't feel like I have anything left to prove."

But that doesn't mean he's coasting when the California quartet hits the road to play its '90s hits such as "Santa Monica," "Everything to Everyone, "I Will Buy You a New Life" and "Father of Mine."

"I'm a troubadour, man. I sing for my supper," Alexakis — who formed Everclear in 1991 in Portland, Oregon, after a tenure with the band Colorfinger, says via phone. "We want to make people feel good. Bands that don't play their hits are not my favorite. It's arrogant. I know what I'm about. I know what we're doing.

"We're just very grateful that we're guys in our 50s and 60s and we're out playing rock 'n' roll, exactly how we want to play — no nets, no ProTools, no (auto) tuning, none of that stuff, no tracks. We're an old-school rock 'n' roll band that plays live every night. If we're on, awesome. And if we're not ... that's rock 'n' roll."

Everclear released its first-ever concert album, "Live at the Whisky A Go Go," recorded at the famed Los Angeles club in September. The band's last studio album, however, was 2015's "Black is the New Black," and Alexakis isn't promising there will be another one — but won't rule it out, either.

"Y'know, I've done 11 records, something like that, with Everclear and a couple other bands," he explains. "I feel pretty good about what we've done and I'm cool playing the old songs and playing the hits. It's nice to record a new song every year and have something to super-serve the fans, just put online and have something new to play at shows. That's fun.

"But the idea of making another (album) has really not sounded attractive to me. If I make another record, it's gonna be because I have to, because I have (songs) that won't leave me alone — which is really the only reason to do it. Lately, I've been working on some songs, some ideas, so we'll see how I feel about those and want to go from there."
