From Seed to Table

Every week, residents of La Posada in Palm Beach Gardens join assistant dining room manager Joannie Saint-Vil in getting their hands dirty.

They're part of the Garden Club at the Kisco Senior Living continuing care retirement community.

Club members like Florence Drobnis meet to plant seeds and nurture a variety of herbs and vegetables, such as cucumbers, tomatoes, parsley, and dill—most of which are later used in La Posada's kitchen.

"It's wonderful to see the fruits of our labor," says Drobnis. "We're helping create the fresh food we eat at meals."

Drobnis, originally from Boston, has been an avid gardener for years. She is happy to continue her passion at La Posada with other residents – some with extensive gardening experience and others just beginners.

Research shows that gardening can reduce stress, improve strength, and help maintain mobility and agility in older adults. The opportunity to engage in community gardens encourages social interaction, fostering a sense of belonging and reducing isolation.

The year-round growing season is another benefit of gardening in Palm Beach Gardens. "Here in Florida, we don't have to worry as much about seasonal impact or when to plant," says Drobnis. "We just put our gloves and aprons on and get ready to grow almost anything."
