Funeral service for KSP trooper today

ASHLAND Kentucky State Police Post 14 announced the death of one of its own.

Sgt. Chris Carter, 42, of Catlettsburg, died Sunday at CMAC Charleston following a brief illness.

He was a 19-year veteran of the Kentucky State Police.

"Sergeant Carter's career with the Kentucky State Police was defined by integrity, unwavering dedication and a steadfast commitment to protecting the people of Kentucky," a media release from Post 14 stated. "Over nearly two decades, he served with distinction and compassion, embodying the values that define our agency: honor, courage and commitment. His legacy is woven into the fabric of our department, as well as the lives of those he touched."

The son of Ruby Cartmel Carter and the late Arnold Carter, Carter was born Sept. 3, 1982, in Ashland, and is survived, in addition to his mother, by his wife, Brittney Carter; two sisters Jessica Menshouse and husband Jeremy, and Renee Huff and husband Dan; and nieces and nephews Lily Menshouse, Sophie Menshouse and Jonah Menshouse.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today at the Louisa Freewill Baptist Church with Pastor Chris Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at the Yatesville Memorial Gardens in Louisa.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of services at the church.

The family of the man shot and killed by Hamilton police on Saturday has identified him as Erixon Kabera — a father of three, known for his kindness and dedication to Hamilton's Rwandan community.
