Gen Z fashion fans spark fierce debate after begging millennials to stop wearing blue jean jackets

On TikTok , Gen Z women - between 12 and 27 - are begging millennials - between the ages of 28 and 43 - to ditch their denim jackets for good.

The jean jacket has been a point of contention between Gen Z and millennials for years, as creators have made videos about how they're 'out of style' and 'cheugy' or dated - and some even say it makes you look ten years older .

In September, Birdie, a content creator in Fort Lauderdale, Florida , shared a TikTok that read 'PSA: My Millennial Girlies' and urged women to ditch their jean jackets.

In the video, Birdie announced, 'Stop wearing them blue jean jackets, please,' telling women to 'hang them up.'

'You have options. Retire them,' Birdie said in the video, which received 59,000 views and 23,000 comments, before adding, 'It's time.'

Birdie captioned the video, 'This is a PUBLIC SERVICE Millennial announcement for my 80s and 90s baby girls. I'm tired of them blue jackets.'

Birdie, who later admitted that she was born in 1993 and actually is a millennial, poked fun at women for pairing the denim with everything from dresses to bodysuits and crop tops.

However, her fellow millennials quickly rushed to the comments to declare they'd never retire the jackets.

'The congregation has collectively spoken and said no! Very respectfully!!!' one woman said, as another called it 'a timeless piece.'

Many thought it was a 'classic' and 'staple' wardrobe piece.

Some millennials called out Gen Z for bringing back old trends like peplum tops and low-rise jeans, as one woman joked, 'So y'all can start wearing them two seconds after we stop?'

'The same people wearing 90s fashion trend in 2024 is complaining about the timeless blue Jean jacket? OK. Weird,' one millennial said.

'I genuinely want to know why other generations obsess about what Millennials are doing and/or wearing... it's quite embarrassing to see,' another woman announced.

Other members of Gen Z were quick to agree that they were over the denim jacket, with one weighing in and saying, 'Right it's ancient and needs to be retired!' and Byrdie agreeing it 'needs a rest.'

Some explained it was better than other more dated options, like the army jacket that was wildly popular in the mid-2000s.

Content creator April Anderson, known as Shugga Cookie to her followers, shared a video on October 29 responding to the viral video.

April proudly walked out the door in her denim jacket and captioned the video: 'One thing I'm going to do is wear a BJJ.'

'The Blue Jean Jacket will forever have me in a chokehold!!!' April continued in her own viral video's caption.

The response received more than 35,000 likes from fellow millennials who refused to part ways with their favorite outerwear, proving that they weren't going to let Gen Z's opinion sway them anytime soon.
