A.Davis2 hr ago
Portland's reputation as America's brunch-loving capital is well earned. But how are you supposed to know which brunches are worth your money and time?

You're in luck, your fellow readers have done the work to nominate and then choose the winners of The Oregonian's Readers Choice Awards for the best brunch spot in town.

No. 5: Flattop & Salamander Named for a pair of kitchen appliances essential for any brunch spot (a grill and broiler), Flattop & Salamander stole the show during the nomination period with more than 100. The menu includes chicken and waffles with hot chile honey or maple-bacon butter ($18), corned beef hash with poblano peppers ($18) and biscuits and gravy with frizzled onions ($8 for one biscuit, $16 for two).

  • No. 4: Jam on Hawthone Need a classic farmer's breakfast? Want a creative take on a bloody mary? There's something for you at Jam on Hawthorne. The menu offers plenty of sweet and savory options. You could try the Cheech & Chong Scramble with tortilla chips, chorizo and ranchero sauce ($16.50) or the Pumpkin Pancakes, which are cinnamon pancakes with a pumpkin cheesecake mousse ($15.50 for two, $8.50 for one). There are vegan and gluten-free options as well.

No. 3: Screen Door This staple of the Portland brunch scene has three locations , including one in the Portland International Airport's Concourse B, with varying menus. We are partial to the original location on East Burnside Street, where our favorites include the praline bacon ($10), chicken and biscuits ($18) and huevos rancheros ($18).

No. 2: Redwood It was a tight race for second place with Redwood coming out just four votes ahead of Screen Door. This restaurant in the Montavilla neighborhood makes almost everything from scratch. The menu changes frequently and includes plenty of breakfast dishes — like a bacon-arugula scramble that has caramelized onions and goat cheese ($17) or chilaquiles made with Three Sisters corn tortillas and a house red sauce ($16) — as well as sandwiches and salads.

No. 1: Mother's Bistro & Bar Chef and owner Lisa Schroeder focuses on home-style cooking at Mother's, which has been a staple of the Portland brunch scene since it opened in 2000. Our restaurant critic Michael Russell recommends the cheesy breakfast nachos ($16 full order, $9 half) and the wild salmon hash ($20 full, $11 half) that comes topped with a perfectly fried egg over creamy country-fried potatoes.
