American Humane, the country's first national animal welfare organization, narrows down a field of 25 courageous canines to five incredible finalists for the 14th Annual Hero Dog Awards.

The Hero Dog Awards is a nationwide competition that recognizes America's standout dogs in five categories: therapy dogs, service and guide dogs, military dogs, law enforcement and first responder dogs, and emerging hero/ shelter dogs.

"The Hero Dog Awards offers an opportunity for Americans to come together and celebrate remarkable dogs who make a lasting mark on our lives," says Dr. Robin Ganzert, President and CEO of American

Humane. "Like the voting public, we are captivated by Dayo, Sampson, K9 Niki, Bo, and Penny, who have done incredible work nationwide. We look forward to sharing their stories with you and giving these Hero Dogs the recognition they deserve."

American Humane Hero Dog Awards finalists:

Therapy Dog category: Dayo is a certified therapy dog and a regular visitor at the George Mark Children's House in San Leandro, California—the first freestanding pediatric palliative care center in the U.S. His presence brings smiles and comfort to patients, families, nurses, and staff. Dayo also lends his support to Camp Erin, a bereavement camp where he helps children cope with loss. Dayo participates in a "Paws to Read" program, and he helps high school students manage stress during the school year. Dayo is truly a beacon of joy to everyone he sees.

Service and Guide/Hearing Dog category: Sampson has dedicated nine incredible years to supporting his handler and profoundly impacting both their lives. After a devastating accident in 2006 left his handler with 23 broken bones and a traumatic brain injury, it seemed like life would never be the same. But with Sampson's unwavering support, recovery became possible. His handler not only healed but earned a degree in neuroscience and founded a company that helps people with disabilities overcome barriers in science.

Military category: K-9 Niki is a Belgian Malinois Shepherd mix with the United States Coast Guard.

She showcased exceptional skills from the beginning, standing out among military working dogs. K9 Niki participated in over 250 high-stakes operations and logged over 4,000 working hours. She helped secure major events like the Rose Bowl and the U.S. Olympic Team Trials and played a crucial role in protecting high-ranking officials. Her community engagement includes educational visits to schools, where she shows young minds the vital roles of military dogs.

Law Enforcement/First Responder category: Bo is a 17-month-old Bloodhound. He began his remarkable journey with the Gastonia Police Department in North Carolina. After rigorous training, Bo began working as a Police K9, quickly proving his invaluable skills. In a notable case, he tracked down robbery suspects, leading to their capture. A touching moment came when Bo found a 7-year-old child who had been taken at knifepoint. Bo's incredible work makes him a true hero and an inspiring presence in the police department.

Emerging Hero/Shelter Dog category: Penny was found after she had been thrown from a car, suffering a crushed pelvis and a leg amputation. A rescue shelter stepped in to help. Despite a grim prognosis and extensive surgeries, Penny's spirit shone through. Her foster family, who fell deeply in love with her, officially adopted her in 2021. Today, Penny symbolizes hope and perseverance, helping teach children empathy and inspiring students to advocate for animal welfare.
