How to avoid fake charities, holiday donation scams that promise local aid

DENVER (KDVR) — The city of Denver is continuing to work toward getting those in need off the streets. A spokesperson told FOX31 that the "All In Mile High Initiative" has moved a total of 2,064 people indoors since July 2023.

Approximately 83% of the people served are still utilizing housing and more than 300 square blocks have been permanently closed to tent encampments.

"It takes a community response to address homelessness, and the city and county of Denver is extremely grateful to have a multitude of shelter services providers, as well as giving individuals who are committed to making a difference for people in need," a city spokesperson told FOX31.

The Denver Rescue Mission found stable homes for 574 families last year. Communications Director Stephen Hinkel said community organizations depend greatly on donations collected during the holiday season.

"All the way from people who give their treasure to individuals who give their time," said Hinkel.

Donations allow organizations like the Denver Rescue Mission to answer the growing need for shelter, food and encouragement.

"We want to make people feel that they are served with dignity, that they are served with grace," said Hinkel.

Unfortunately, many efforts that depend on donations end up competing with scammers ready to trick donors into handing over money to fake organizations and holiday drives.

"It can hurt us because we understand people's giving is maybe dropping a little bit," said Hinkel. The Denver Foundation told the Problem Solvers the best way to avoid scams is to check organizations out with the Guidestar website and examine the IRS 990 tax form. "It will talk about their status, that they're in good standing, it will talk about who their major donors are," said Dace West.

West said any donor trying to provide a tax-deductible gift should ensure the organization's 5013c nonprofit status. New organizations can also register on the Guidestar website.
