Jersey Mike’s Subs is coming to Modesto. When and where will the sandwich chain open?

Jersey Mike's Subs, an international sub sandwich chain, is opening a Modesto location near McHenry Village.

The chain has more than 4,000 locations open and in development, and 385 locations in California — with more coming. The closest Jersey Mike's to Modesto is on Grant Line Road in Tracy.

Modesto's first location will open at 1809 McHenry Ave. Suite A in early December, a representative of the company said. The site is near Habit Burger & Grill, Chipotle and Starbucks.

Jersey Mike's serves cold and hot subs on bread that's baked fresh daily (white, wheat or rosemary Parmesan). Udi's gluten free bread is also available.

Sub options include The Original Italian (ham, prosciuttini, cappacuolo, salami, pepperoni and provolone), Mike's Famous Philly (beef with grilled onions, peppers and white American cheese) and Jersey Shore's Favorite (ham, cappacuolo and provolone). There are 26 subs on the menu.

Order a sub "Mike's Way" and it'll be topped with onions, lettuce, tomatoes, oregano, salt and The Juice — a blend of red wine vinegar and olive oil.

You can ditch the carbs and order anything off the menu as a bowl. Items can also be ordered as a wrap.

Mike's Subs opened as a storefront location in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, in 1956. Because of its location on the Jersey Shore, it grew quickly in popularity among tourists from New York to Philadelphia to Washington, D.C., according to the company.

Peter Cancro, a 17-year-old high school senior who had worked for Mike's Subs since he was 14, bought the operation in 1975 with the help of his football coach.

Over the next decade, Cancro opened two other local Mike's Subs stores. In 1987, he began franchising the Mike's concept, changing the name to Jersey Mike's Subs to capture the authenticity of the original store, according to the company.

Today, Cancro is CEO of Jersey Mike's Franchise Systems, Inc. headquartered in Manasquan, New Jersey.
