Letter: Red-light runners pose a threat to safety

M.Kim28 min ago

Doesn't a yellow light at an intersection mean slow down and prepare to stop? A yellow light at an intersection means to slow down, not speed up with the intent of getting through the intersection!

We are certain that we all have noticed the exponential increase in people — and even large trucks — running a red light.

Moreover, our observations are that the majority of driver-related accidents on the city occur at intersections when someone is running the red light and actually (and frighteningly) "speeding up" in an attempt to get through.

Yes, it is within the law to enter the intersection when the light is still yellow but not if it changes immediately before entering the intersection.

We believe and feel an unfortunate growing and troubling disregard for right and wrong, for accepted parameters of behavior, and for rules and for laws. The thinking that "if I do not get caught or that there are no consequences, then it is OK."

With fewer traffic police on the road, we urge our city (and others) to address this problem with cameras as well as traffic police officers at high infraction intersections in Rochester and to enforce this in every case. Every driver knows this law, but too many choose to willfully ignore it, because they know there is no one at the intersection to enforce the law.
