Madison man sentenced to 3.5 years in prison following guilty plea of illegal gun ownership

MADISON, Wis. (WFRV) – Timothy M. O'Shea, the United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced on Wednesday that a 36-year-old Madison man will spend 3.5 years in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm.

Dedonta J. Davis was sentenced on Sept. 12, and pled guilty to the charge on June 13. The charge stems from Davis' being a prior convicted felon, which bars him from legally owning a firearm.

Davis was arrested in January 2024 on state charges that came from an investigation into a shooting that occurred outside a bar in Fitchburg, Wisconsin. Officers performed a search warrant at his apartment and found a loaded handgun with ammunition, and Davis' DNA was confirmed to be on the handgun.

U.S. District Judge William M. Conley noted that Davis was modeling dangerous behavior while discussing his sentencing. Judge Conley also referenced his admitted involvement in the shooting and criminal history of drugs and alcohol, additionally noting that Davis had made efforts towards gainful employment.

Davis will also serve three years of supervised release following his prison term. No more details were provided.
