HENDERSON, Ky (WEHT) – Madisonville Police arrest a man after they say was driving recklessly and showing signs of impairment.

According to a citation, an MPD sergeant saw a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado at about 11 p.m. Thursday not able to maintain a straight direction of travel on West Noel Avenue. After initiating a traffic stop, police say the driver turned on the right turn signal but made an abrupt left turn into a parking lot.

The driver was identified as Lloyd Smith. Smith claimed he dropped a bag of candied popcorn that was causing his behavior. Police say he had bloodshot eyes, constricted pupils and changed his story to where he was coming from a couple of times.

After reportedly failing sobriety tests, a K9 was called to conduct a free air sniff. The K9 reportedly alerted to possible controlled substances.

Smith was placed into custody, and during a search, multiple bottles of prescription medication were allegedly found including an empty bottle of hydrocodone/acetaminophen tablets, several supplements including kratom and OTC products use for energy and erectile dysfunction.

MPD says throughout the investigation, Smith showed agitated and paranoid behavior.

Smith has since been released from custody.
