Man Charged In 'Smash And Grab' Jewelry Heist At Trumbull Mall: Police Police said they have charged one of three thieves who smashed glass display cases and stole several thousand dollars' worth of jewelry.

TRUMBULL, CT — Police announced Friday they have charged one of three masked thieves accused of smashing glass display cases and stealing several thousand dollars' worth of jewelry from a store at the Trumbull Mall earlier this year.

In a news release, Police Lt. Brian Weir said Javon Thorbourne, 30, of Bridgeport, was charged with first-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny, first-degree criminal mischief and breach of peace.

The theft was first reported April 17 around 1:45 p.m. after shoppers were alarmed by the loud noise of the shattering glass, which some mistook to be a gunshot. It was later determined that no weapons were involved and no injuries were reported, Weir said.

According to Weir, the three masked thieves smashed the glass display cases at a Kay's store in the mall with hammers and stole over $85,000 worth of jewelry as shoppers watched nearby.

The suspects fled from the mall on foot and escaped in a dark four-door sedan, which was later recovered, Weir said.

After collecting evidence and interviewing a number of witnesses, police were able to identify and locate the suspect vehicle, which led to the identification and arrest of Thorbourne, according to Weir.

Weir also noted police are still investigating the incident and working to identifying the remaining suspects.

Thorbourne, who was already incarcerated and being arraigned in Bridgeport Superior Court for other crimes, was processed and charged, according to Weir.

He was held on a $250,000 bond and arraigned in court Thursday, Weir said.
