A 58-year-old Washington Township man was recently sentenced to time served – 21 months – and five years probation after admitting to threatening Shiawassee County officials, according to court records.

George Hamas was sentenced Oct. 3 by Shiawassee Circuit Judge Suzanne Geddis in Corunna after pleading guilty to two counts of making a false report or threat of terrorism on allegations he threatened harm to multiple elected officials in Shiawassee County in 2022.

He had been serving in the county jail in lieu of bond since his arrest.

Hamas entered the pleas under a deal with the state Attorney General's Office in which two additional counts of the same charge and two counts of using a computer to commit a crime were dismissed.

Hamas was accused of sending a number of messages online and in telephone voicemails to former and current public officials in Shiawassee, threatening death and violent acts upon them in June 2022, according to the Michigan Attorney General's Office. The Shiawassee County Sheriff's Office said multiple threats were posted online and recorded on voicemail.
