Mayor-elect to declare 'fentanyl emergency' on Day 1 in San Francisco

Levi Strauss heir Daniel Lurie is the mayor-elect of San Francisco and shared his plans to quickly get to work once in office.

Lurie held his first speech as mayor-elect on Friday. On Thursday evening, London Breed, the city's first Black female mayor, conceded the race.

The Associated Press has not yet declared a winner in the race as thousands of ballots had not yet been counted and added to the ranked-choice voting tabulations.

However, with Breed trailing in the count, she promised a smooth transition as Lurie takes over the role of mayor.

In a brief press conference, Lurie shared plans todeclare a state of emergency on fentanyl on his first day in office in January, according to

Lurie shared his intention to shut down "open-air fentanyl markets" in the city and noted hisdisagreements with President-elect Donald Trump, while also assuring that will not get in his way of helping the city.

According to the Times, fentanyl is responsible for most of the 3,300 drug deaths reported in San Francisco since 2020.

Lurie spent nearly $9 million of his own money on his bid for mayor. It will be his first role in public office.
