A Moravia Central School District teacher has been recognized by the United Way of Cayuga County for his work with a local music education nonprofit.

Jim Van Arsdale, who teaches fifth grade at Millard Fillmore Elementary School, is the first recipient of the local United Way's Cheryl H. Potter Volunteer Service Award.

Along with teaching, Van Arsdale founded Perform 4 Purpose with his daughter Jen in 2008. The nonprofit helps youth learn, create and perform music, and frequently presents concerts that support local causes. In September 2022, it passed a total of $1 million raised for them.

Van Arsdale said in a news release from the school district that he is honored to be the first person to win the award.

"It's not just me, though. We have a big team with Perform 4 Purpose," he said. "I hope we are a great example of the kind of impact an organization can have in the community."

The award acknowledges dedication to volunteerism and is named after Cheryl H. Potter, who was known for her service work in the community, the district said.

Van Arsdale, who has also been a member of the Auburn Enlarged City School District Board of Education since 2022, performs music regularly in the area as well.

"I can't imagine life without music," he said.

"It's a constant companion. It was my personal identity when I was young, and it gave me a lot of confidence. We are all about building good people and good citizens, and music is our tool to do that."
