Motorcyclist killed in Hilo, negligent homicide investigation opened

HILO, Hawaii (KHON2) — Big Island police have opened a negligent homicide investigation following a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a motorcyclist on Sunday evening.

The incident was reported just after 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Ainaola Drive and Komohana Street.

According to police, a 2019 Kawasaki motorcycle was traveling south on Ainaola Drive when it collided with a 2015 Nissan sedan, which was negotiating a left turn from Ainaola Drive onto Komohana Street.

First responders found the motorcyclist unresponsive at the scene and transported him to Hilo Benioff Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 10:22 p.m.

The 37-year-old Nissan driver from Hilo and the back seat passenger were uninjured. The 23-year-old female passenger from Hilo was treated for minor injuries.

Officials said the motorcyclist has not been identified and an autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.

According to Hawaii police, the fatal collision marks the island's 23rd traffic fatality of 2024 compared to the 14 that happened around this time last year.
