New plans for $ 1 billion Houston Astrodome revamp include state
HOUSTON, Texas - Plans to revamp a popular landmark in Houston, Texas were unveiled on Wednesday.
The one-billion-dollar plan for the Houston Astrodome includes four state-of-the-art buildings under its roof and a retail village.
Renderings show a boulevard that would cut through the dome and connect to other buildings in NRG Park.
The Astrodome Conservancy is the non-profit organization leading redevelopment efforts for the stadium.
The conservancy hopes the project will attract a significant amount of private funds to minimize the burden on taxpayers.
The astrodome was home to the Houston Astros from 19-65 to 19-99.
It's also where the Houston Oilers played and where Muhammad Ali boxed in the late 19-60's.
It was last used in 2005 to house Hurricane Katrina evacuees.
The astrodome officially closed in 2009.
