New turntable will spin engines at RRHMA railyard

J.Smith3 hr ago

The Railroading Heritage of Midwest America (RRHMA) is getting some help to move train engines around the railyard in Silvis.

A railroad turntable made the 215 mile trip from the BNSF Clyde Yard in Cicero to Silvis. At one time, it was the largest operational turntable in the world at 135 feet long and 160,000 pounds. The bridge section alone required three 85 food flat cars to make the trip. Once restored, it will once again be the largest in the world. It will be large enough to move some of the massive engines currently being restored at the RRHMA.

It arrived in Silvis on September 17. It'll take some time to get the turntable up and running, because crews must still find a place to assemble it and finish further restoration. Click here for more from the RRHMA.
