Nov. 8—Oakwood cemetery will hold a special Veterans Day ceremony on Monday where it will recognize 70 Niagara County veterans who have passed between 2023 and 2024.

The hour-long event will start at 11 a.m. at the flagpole at the cemetery's entrance at 747 Portage Road. The veterans honored have served in World War II or the Vietnam War.

"We wanted to honor and respect them for their service," said Executive Director Cindy Trowman.

Oakwood normally has an event on Memorial Day recognizing those who passed away but it didn't take place this year due to changes in the board and staff. That resulted in honoring them this Monday instead.

Trowman hopes it is well attended, as the families of all 70 veterans have been invited to the cemetery.

The VFW American Legion Post 873 from Newfane and Niagara Falls ARW Honor Guard will be on hand starting with the posting of colors. The Rev. Patrick Bradley will provide the invocation, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, the National Anthem, and a reading of the poem, "In Flanders Fields."

Bagpiper Ron Smith will perform Amazing Grace with the names of the honored veterans being named afterward. The ceremony will end with the ARW Honor Guard performing Taps and retiring the colors.

The city of Niagara Falls will host its annual ceremony on Monday as well at the Veterans Memorial at Hyde Park. Information on that ceremony will appear in Saturday's Gazette.
